The background to geGIS
geGIS is a program generator/configurator for establishing electronic GIS windows, so that all your GIS data is available and easily accessible for your other staff and even the outside world.
There is a tremendous demand for reliable GIS layers in Flanders. Recent data is at a premium as a general rule. These (GIS) data layers have several authors in many cases (such as the 308 municipalities against the background of the inventory of vacant plots or the 5 provinces in the context of the supralocal bicycle route networks). Reliability may be guaranteed solely in the light of a structured and streamlined system of data interchange between various public administrations in the case of (gis)data, where all officials continue to be responsible for their own data. All governmental actors also have the opportunity to be able examine data in a straightforward fashion (GIS) and perform simple operations.
Admirably catering for these needs, GIS is an open source platform designed to meet the Authorities of Flanders' requirement to have a general, reusable platform. Making deliverables available under GPL helps us to maximise its reusability. Every project carried out according to the geGIS approach contributes to the platform's consolidation. An initial project set to focus on the platform that has been developed and avail itself of the geGIS technology and philosophy is the 'inventory of vacant plots' (IOP).
